In 2033, justice rides a tank and wears lip gloss.

1995

Genres:
Sci-Fi, Comedy, Action, Comic

Starring:
Lori Petty, Malcolm McDonell, Naomi Watts, Ice-T

Summary:
The year is 2033 and a huge meteor has struck the earth and killed off most of the population. The remainder of the population is forced to deal with the absolute lack of surface water. In fact the only water available is through underground reservoirs that are conveniently controlled by Kesslee (McDonnell), the leader of monopoly company Water and Power.

Rebecca, aka Tank Girl (Petty), and her friends live in the middle of the desert by siphoning water illegally from the company. When they are found out, most of Rebecca's friends are killed, and she herself is captured. With her bubbly and bitchy personality, she immediately makes enemies with Kesslee and becomes a worker in the mines underground. However, with the help of her new sidekick Jet, Rebecca escapes the mines with a handy new toy, a full-size tank that does whatever she tells it to.

With her tank, Rebecca sets off on numerous adventures to rescue her young friend, befriend the genetically engineered half-kangaroo Rippers, and annoy the hell out of Kesslee while bringing down Water and Power.

Response:
Woa. This movie's weird. I'd heard a lot of bad things about it. The professional critics and reviewers called it complete crap and a turkey. I'm going out on a limb here to say screw them.

Tank Girl is a nutty fun ride through a world based on a popular UK comic strip. It's not serious; nothing makes sense in it (especially that Broadway bit in the futuristic brothel). Let me repeat myself...it's not serious. It was funny to me to read analytical reviews about the true scientific validity of the Rippers. C'mon, they're half-kangaroo warriors! Do you really think the writer's making a realistic statement here?

The entire movie is laced with animated bits from the comic strip that gives it a really trippy feel. Lori Petty is perfect as the cute and tough Tank Girl, delivering one-liners with perfect innocence (check out when she breaks a guard's neck with her legs and looks around in defense "What?"). This is definitely a sci-fi heroine any feminist would be proud of.

The only thing that I really didn't like was the Chester Cheetah-like lead Ripper. Ugh, half-roo people are weird enough, but was it really necessary to give the leader a fetish for jazz? It really did make me cringe when they did that weird poetry praying thing. But I'll overlook this annoying Ripper cause Booga was so darn cute (and the sexual undertones between him and Tank Girl were, um, memorable).

So I'm standing alone in the reviewing world and giving this movie two thumbs up! Oh wait, I don't rate that way.

Point Blank:
If you want Mad Maxine on acid, this movie's for you.
