The show has been cancelled...but the adventure is just beginning.

1999

Genres:
Comedy, Sci-Fi

Starring:
Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Allan Rickman

Summary:
The cast of the defunct and cheesy cult sci-fi show Galaxy Quest spend their days appearing at Star Trek-like conventions and signing autographs for overzealous fans. However, their life takes an unexpected turn when the actors are beamed far into space by an alien species desperate for their help. The aliens believe that Commnader Taggert (Allen) and his coworkers are actually space heros and that the series is part of a historical archive that documents their adventures. They believe that the actors are the only ones who can save their race from the evil lizardy villain determined to exterminate them. To coddle his weakening ego, Taggert pretends that he is indeed a space hero. The crew gives heroism their best effort, but they soon find that intergalactic heroism takes more than gratuitous cleavage shots and witty one-liners.

Response:
Galaxy Quest is a genuinely funny movie. There are a few stray parts that fall flat, but there are also more than a few really funny bits (check out the reaction when the "engineer" and the alien make out). Star Trek fans will recognize a lot of mocking humor directed at the series and its followers. The cheesy special effects add to the cult sci-fi aura surrounding the film.

Sigourney Weaver and Allan Rickman steal the show with their non-traditional roles. Sigourney sheds her badass masculine Ripley image and slides into the role of a ditzy lieutenant as she flashes more breast shots than an episode of Baywatch (ok, maybe not quite as much). Rickman plays a dry, cynical, and anxiety-ridden Shakespearean actor which may not have been so wacky if he didn't spend most of the movie with a rubber prosthetic alien forehead on.

Point Blank:
Galaxy Quest is a must for all sci-fi fans who know how to properly make fun of themselves.
