William Gibson is considered the father of the cyperpunk genre, with his debut novel Neuromancer held as the pivotal work in the genre. Gibson grew up in Virginia and studied English literature at the University of British Columbia. During his early career, Gibson befriended acclaimed hard science fiction writer Bruce Sterling, with whom he has developed a successful professional partnership. Gibson's early works focus on cyberspace and cybernetics. Neuromancer is the only novel to have won Nebula, Hugo, and Philip K Dick Awards, and Gibson is considered to be one of the most influential novelists of the latter 20th century. Through his stories, Gibson has coined many popular words, including 'cyberspace', 'netsurfing', 'ICE', 'jacking in', and 'neural implants', as well as developing concepts such as net consciousness, virtual interaction and 'the matrix'.
